On 22 July 2025, the Confronting Climate Change (CCC) initiative, in collaboration with WWF Conservation Champions, hosted an insightful and hands-on workshop at the Sustainability Institute in Stellenbosch. The event brought together wine producers, conservation-minded farmers, and agri-businesses from across the Western Cape to strengthen their understanding of climate-related challenges and equip them with the tools to take meaningful climate action.
The workshop opened with a warm welcome and an introduction to Blue North Sustainability, the consultancy behind the CCC initiative. Attendees were introduced to Blue North’s broader mission of enabling a resilient and sustainable agricultural sector in South Africa through data-driven insights and strategic support.
This was followed by an engaging session titled “What is a Carbon Footprint and Why is it Important to Calculate it?”. The CCC team unpacked the relevance of carbon footprints within the agricultural context, highlighting how understanding and quantifying emissions is the first step toward implementing credible climate strategies, improving efficiency, and preparing for future regulatory and market expectations.
The core of the workshop was a live demonstration of the CCC online carbon footprinting tool, showcasing its user-friendly design and sector-specific functionalities. Attendees gained practical knowledge on how to use the tool to calculate emissions across farm operations, packhouses, and the broader supply chain.
After a morning of learning and discussion, participants were treated to a locally-sourced lunch featuring fresh ingredients from surrounding farms in the Lynedoch Valley. The meal not only highlighted the value of local, sustainable agriculture but also fostered connections and conversations among attendees.
The afternoon session provided hands-on support, where the CCC team worked directly with participants to begin uploading and reviewing their datasets in the CCC system. This practical guidance helped demystify the data collection process and empowered attendees to take the next step in their carbon journey.
The collaboration between CCC and the WWF Conservation Champions programme, which supports South African wine producers in adopting environmentally responsible practices, reflects a shared commitment to sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation. Overall, the workshop was a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and practical application, leaving participants more informed and motivated to lead the way in climate-smart farming.
