A balanced cycle of carbon throughout our living environments on Earth is vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems and stabilise the global climate. It appears that, during this age of rapid industrialisation, we have disrupted the delicate flow of carbon between the Earth’s carbon reservoirs, creating instability and uncertainty. However, we still have the opportunity to mitigate the unfavourable impacts that this disturbance will bring. In particular, our agriculture, with its close proximity to plants, soils, water and air, will have an important role to play if these mitigation efforts are to be successful.
