Understanding and managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is no longer optional – it’s a necessity. For many businesses, this means having a robust and accurate GHG inventory. While generic GHG calculators can be a starting point, they often fall short when it comes to capturing the nuances of complex operations, diverse supply chains, and varying data sources. They also often lack the flexibility to accommodate the intricacies of multiple certification schemes and their unique calculation methodologies and reporting frameworks. Blue North’s advisory services support businesses in developing bespoke GHG calculators tailored to their distinct needs. This article offers a glimpse into one of those undertakings.

Our client, operating in Brazil’s biofuel sector, needed a tool that could precisely measure their emissions across a diverse range of activities, while also adhering to the specific requirements of International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) EU and CORSIA certification schemes. Off-the-shelf calculators often struggle to capture this level of complexity, leading to inaccurate or incomplete emissions estimates.

Our process began with a deep dive into understanding their operations by mapping out their value chain, from feedstock cultivation to biofuel production and distribution, identifying all relevant emission sources along the way, and understanding the availability and quality of their data. This initial assessment, which included navigating some language nuances, was crucial, as it laid the foundation for the entire calculator.

From there, we moved into the development phase, building the calculator in Excel. This involved designing user-friendly input templates with robust back-end calculations to determine the emissions for various scenarios, and implementing data validation checks and error handling to ensure accuracy and prevent inconsistencies.

One of the key challenges we faced was integrating data from various sources across different language contexts. We had to develop a multi-lingual, panoptic data collection system for collecting, cleaning, and standardising this data whilst working closely with the client’s team.

Generic calculators often rely on average emission factors, which may not accurately reflect the client’s specific circumstances. We conducted research to identify and incorporate reputable, industry-specific emission factors, as well as data from the client’s operations. This ensured a more coherent result, reflecting their unique operational profile.

The outcome? A custom-built, client-aligned, user-friendly, audit-ready GHG calculator. This tool provides them with a comprehensive view of their emissions footprint, enabling them to:

  • Identify emission hotspots: The granular breakdown of emissions allows the client to pinpoint areas where they can focus their reduction efforts and maximise impact.
  • Track progress over time: The calculator enables monitoring of emissions, allowing the client to measure the impact of their sustainability initiatives and demonstrate progress toward their targets.
  • Make informed decisions: Accurate GHG data supports strategic decision-making related to resource efficiency, supply chain management, and investment in low-carbon technologies, ultimately driving business market value.
  • Meet reporting and auditing requirements: The calculator facilitates compliance with ISCC reporting frameworks, enhancing transparency for audits.

Developing a bespoke GHG calculator is not a one-size-fits-all exercise. It requires a thorough understanding of the client’s operations, technical expertise in GHG accounting and data management, and the ability to overcome data integration challenges. But the benefits of having a tailored tool are undeniable.
