Blue North has recently concluded a review of the agrochemical usage of Rift Valley Holdings (RVH), a large agricultural company in Zimbabwe. Formally established in 2012, RVH is Zimbabwe’s largest agriculture and forestry group, with significant operations producing tobacco, cereals, timber and fruit & nut crops. The project entailed an in-depth evaluation of its current agrochemical usage, to analyse their environmental and human impacts, and for this analysis to form the basis to propose viable alternative treatments and/or practices. This project was considered as part of RVH’s efforts to reduce reliance on agrochemicals and/or reduce the environmental and human impact of its pest control practices. An agrochemical impact analysis tool was also created to enable RVH to view the outcomes of the analysis in a consolidated way. This tool will also give RVH the means to measure their chemical usage and the impacts thereof.
